New Research Confirms Booster Jabs Significantly Reduce COVID-19 Mortality

A groundbreaking study published in Vaccine reveals that booster vaccines administered in the autumn of 2022 significantly lowered the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and death among over 3 million adults in England. Conducted by researchers from the universities of Bristol and Oxford, the study provides compelling evidence of booster vaccines' effectiveness in combating COVID-19.

The research, published on February 18, compared the outcomes of individuals who received Moderna (BA.1 mRNA-1273) or Pfizer-BioNTech (BA.1 BNT162b2) booster vaccines. It found that both vaccines offered similar protection against COVID-19, but this protection waned over time, with the highest effectiveness observed within the first 70 days.

This study builds upon previous research demonstrating the initial COVID-19 vaccination's ability to reduce hospitalization and death risks. The focus of this latest study was to assess the impact of booster vaccines on individuals aged 50 or older who had already received their initial COVID-19 vaccination.

The research team analyzed linked GP and hospital records from the OpenSAFELY research platform, comparing 3,464,877 adults eligible for booster vaccination during the autumn 2022 campaign with an equal number of unboosted individuals. The study matched participants based on age, vaccination history, clinical vulnerability, and geographical location.

Over a year-long follow-up period, the study recorded significant outcomes: 14,436 COVID-19 hospitalizations, 1,152 COVID-19 deaths, 32,184 non-COVID-19 deaths, and 52,758 fractures. The findings revealed that boostered individuals had notably lower risks of COVID-19 hospitalization (3.78 vs 6.81 per 1,000) and death (0.29 vs 0.61 per 1,000) compared to unboosted individuals.

Furthermore, the study found that booster vaccines halved the risks of COVID-19 hospitalization and death. Interestingly, the study also noted a small reduction in fracture risk for boostered individuals, suggesting that not all confounding factors were accounted for. However, the relatively small effect on fractures reassures the validity of the study's conclusions.

Dr. Paul Madley-Dowd, a Research Fellow in Medical Statistics and Health Data Science at the University of Bristol, emphasized the importance of booster vaccination among individuals over 50 years old, stating, 'Our findings reinforce the importance of booster vaccination against COVID-19 among people over 50 years old.'

The study was funded by various organizations, including NHS England, Wellcome Trust, MRC, NIHR, and the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science.
