Borkum Riffgrund 3: Largest Offshore Wind Farm in Germany Generates First Power | Ørsted & Nuveen (2026)

Europe's Energy Revolution: Unlocking Green Power Potential

In a significant milestone for the renewable energy sector, Ørsted's Borkum Riffgrund 3, the largest offshore wind farm in Germany, has begun generating electricity. This development marks a pivotal step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Europe.

But here's where it gets controversial: the project showcases the complexity of the European offshore wind supply chain. With components sourced from Germany, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, it raises questions about the true nature of energy independence. Can a project be considered independent when it relies on a diverse range of European countries for its components?

And this is the part most people miss: the impact of Borkum Riffgrund 3 extends beyond its impressive size. Through long-term corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs), the wind farm will power the decarbonization efforts of industry and technology giants. Amazon, BASF, Covestro, Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group, and Google have all signed agreements, showcasing their commitment to a greener future.

Patrick Harnett, Ørsted's Chief Construction Officer, emphasizes the project's significance: "Offshore wind is crucial for Europe's energy independence and job creation. Borkum Riffgrund 3 exemplifies this, creating local manufacturing jobs and providing a substantial amount of green energy to support European industry."

Jordi Francesch, Managing Director at Nuveen Infrastructure, highlights the project's impact on Germany and the EU: "The first power generation at Borkum Riffgrund 3 is a landmark for German offshore wind and our commitment to the EU energy transition. This project sets a new benchmark for decarbonization and long-term energy security."

Felix Gschnell, Program Director for Borkum Riffgrund 3, adds: "With first power, we're nearing completion. Our team's dedication has been instrumental, and we're focused on commissioning the remaining turbines for full commercial operation in Q1 2026."

Located approximately 72km off the German North Sea coast, Borkum Riffgrund 3 covers an area of around 75km². It boasts 83 wind turbines, each with an impressive 11MW capacity. What's unique is that it's the first Ørsted offshore wind farm in Germany without an offshore substation (OSS). Instead, it utilizes a direct 66 kV connection to the DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform, operated by TenneT.

Borkum Riffgrund 3's impact on corporate decarbonization efforts is significant. Ørsted has secured long-term CPPA agreements with industrial and technology customers, providing price security for both parties. These agreements highlight the growing trend of corporations taking responsibility for their energy footprint.

Ørsted's offshore wind generation portfolio in Germany is a force to be reckoned with. Earlier this year, their Gode Wind3 wind farm was fully commissioned, powering the equivalent of 250,000 homes. With these recent additions, Ørsted's installed offshore wind power capacity in Germany reaches approximately 2.5 GW, equivalent to powering 2.5 million homes. Ørsted's market leadership in Germany, operating over 20% of the country's offshore wind capacity, is a testament to their expertise.
