Kiko Loureiro, the former MEGADETH guitarist known for his work with MEGADETH and ANGRA, recently spoke with XP AIR host Nasir AlBashir about the evolving dynamics of being in a band in the social media era. The core question he explored was whether forming and sustaining a band has become easier or harder as society grows more individualistic and connected online. He reflected on how audiences and festivals increasingly revolve around the individual performer rather than the group, and how personal branding can overshadow collective collaboration. Loureiro pointed out that audiences now expect each member to bring a personal element that draws people into the event, which complicates long-term band cohesion. He also compared the situation to historical bands, noting how icons like Led Zeppelin and Queen faced existential crises after pivotal members passed away and ultimately questioned how current bands will navigate similar pressures in the future.
In response to comments about growing pressures on musicians to excel as a unit, Loureiro argued that a band’s strength isn’t defined by everyone being the absolute best. He described the ensemble as capable of functioning despite a weaker link, arguing that imperfection can contribute to a band’s character and chemistry. He emphasized that a group often relies on distinct roles—such as a leader, a primary composer, a producer, and a stabilizing team member—any one of whom might not be the top musician but who plays a crucial part in keeping the group balanced and effective. He used analogies from sports and noted that the best teams frequently rely on a non-frontline member who maintains rhythm, morale, and harmony, rather than a collection of equally perfect players.
Louiro announced in November 2023 that he would extend his hiatus from MEGADETH’s touring to avoid hindering the band’s plans and the hard work of everyone involved. He had previously disclosed in September 2023 that he would sit out the next leg of the “Crush The World” tour to stay with his children in Finland. Shortly after his extended absence, MEGADETH’s frontman Dave Mustaine publicly expressed love and support for Loureiro, praising him as a top-tier professional and a key contributor to the band’s achievements, including the Grammy-winning work on Dystopia and the honors received for The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead. Mustaine noted that he wouldn’t have achieved these milestones without Loureiro.
MEGADETH introduced Teemu Mäntysaari as Loureiro’s replacement, performing the first show with him on September 6, 2023, at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mäntysaari, now 38, hails from Tampere, Finland, started playing guitar at 12 and previously joined WINTERSUN in 2004. He has also been part of SMACKBOUND since 2015. Loureiro had joined MEGADETH in April 2015, roughly five months after Chris Broderick exited the group. Loureiro’s most recent solo album, Theory Of Mind, was released in November 2024.
