North Dakota State University (NDSU) is reportedly in advanced talks with the Mountain West Conference to become a football-only member in 2026. This potential move comes as NDSU, a powerhouse in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), seeks to elevate its football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. The Bison have enjoyed remarkable success in the FCS, claiming 10 national championships since 2011, and have faced FBS opponents with impressive results, boasting a 9-5 record since 2004. The conference's expansion is driven by the impending departure of several teams, including Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State, which are transitioning to the Pac-12 Conference. In response, the Mountain West is strategically adding new members, such as UTEP and Northern Illinois, to maintain its competitiveness. The addition of NDSU would significantly boost the conference's football membership to 10, further solidifying its position in the sport. The talks are progressing, with both parties engaged in deep conversations, and a deal could be finalized in the coming weeks. However, the transition would require substantial fees, including a hefty entry fee and a $5 million NCAA fee for the FBS move, which could potentially increase the conference's membership to 137. The Mountain West recently secured a lucrative TV deal with Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and The CW, spanning from fall 2026 to summer 2032, ensuring increased exposure and revenue for the conference and its members.
