A bold move in Queens: Democratic Socialists gain ground.
In a surprising turn of events, the Queens Democratic Party has nominated Diana Moreno, a democratic socialist backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), to succeed Mayor Zohran Mamdani in Assembly District 36. This nomination is a testament to the shifting political landscape in New York City, where socialist ideals are gaining traction.
Moreno, an immigrant from Ecuador and a proud member of NYC-DSA, has been endorsed by Mamdani himself and the NYC-DSA chapter. Her campaign, launched in October, has since gained momentum, with support from various organizations and her experience as a co-chair of the Queens DSA branch.
"Diana has been an unwavering advocate for union workers and immigrant communities," Mamdani stated. "She embodies the spirit of our movement, and I have no doubt she will continue to fight for our shared values."
But here's where it gets controversial: Moreno's nomination was not a typical choice for the Queens county party. The party, traditionally dominated by moderate Black and brown homeowners, has been resistant to the rising tide of DSA-aligned candidates. However, Mamdani's popularity and influence have forced a rethink.
The Queens Democratic Party faced a dilemma: ignore Moreno and nominate a loyal insider, or embrace the popular new mayor's choice. They chose the latter, realizing that fighting against a candidate backed by Mamdani could be futile.
And this is the part most people miss: Astoria, the heart of Assembly District 36, is known as "The People's Republic of Astoria." It's a stronghold for democratic socialists, with representation in the City Council, state Legislature, and Congress. In this context, Moreno, with her DSA backing and Mamdani's support, could have easily won as a third-party candidate, a scenario the Queens Democrats wanted to avoid at all costs.
So, instead of a potentially losing battle, the county party decided to back Moreno. With three other candidates in the race, Moreno is the only one appearing on the Feb. 3 special election ballot as the Democratic nominee. Her victory seems all but assured, thanks to the combined support of Mamdani, DSA, and the county party.
This move by the Queens Democrats is a strategic concession, recognizing the growing influence of democratic socialism in New York City politics.
