On a fateful bus ride to her preseason tournament, Sam received the life-changing news that she had been accepted into medical school. Her teammates and coaches witnessed this momentous occasion, capturing it on their phones and celebrating with her.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sam's success extends far beyond her academic achievements. Her true impact lies in the relationships she fosters and the leadership she embodies.
Sam's time at The University of Texas at Tyler was a testament to her ability to connect and inspire. She helped the softball team achieve back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships, winning awards and setting records along the way. But it was her impact on her teammates that truly defined her legacy.
"My time at UT Tyler was about so much more than championships," Sam shared. "The friendships I formed and the life lessons I learned from my coaches will stay with me forever."
Teammate Sam Garcia described the profound impact Sam had on her freshman year. "From the moment I arrived, Sam welcomed me with open arms. She was always there for me, no matter what."
Sam's deep connection with others began at a young age with her younger brother, Zachary, who has autism. Her mother, Renea, recalled how Sam patiently worked with Zachary on flashcards and speech therapy exercises.
"She taught me the importance of patience and empathy at a very young age," Renea said. "Sam has helped Zachary grow and gain confidence."
In high school, Sam's dedication knew no bounds. She spent her Saturday nights at the batting cage and studying for exams, always pushing herself to be the best.
"She has an inner drive that is truly unique," Renea added. "She may not be the most naturally gifted athlete, but she outworks everyone."
At UT Tyler, Sam grounded the team with her prayers and leadership. She regularly led team prayers and demonstrated how to carry oneself with pride, both on and off the field.
"Her determination was unmatched," Garcia said. "She was an incredible player and an even better person. Hardworking, dedicated, and kind, she inspires me every day."
And this is the part most people miss... Sam's leadership extended beyond the softball field. She engaged in community service, supporting initiatives like the Special Olympics and the East Texas food bank. As an East Texas native, service was a natural extension of her values.
"Life is about community," Sam explained. "Giving back is something I value, and I wouldn't be here without my community. So, it's only right that I give back to those who raised me."
After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in biochemistry, Sam added another accolade to her list: the 2025 NCAA Woman of the Year award. This honor recognizes her academic achievements, athletic excellence, community service, and leadership.
But here's the real question: Is it her accomplishments that make her exceptional, or is it her relationships and impact on others?
"It's about the people," Sam said. "The relationships I've formed and the lessons I've learned from my teammates and coaches have shaped me."
As she begins her first year of medical school, Sam reflects on the influence of softball in her life.
"Softball has given me a sense of grit that not everyone possesses. It's a game of failure, but you have to keep moving forward and use those failures as motivation."
And as she embarks on a new path, Sam's commitment to leadership and service remains unwavering.
"She has a deep passion for helping others," her mother said. "If I could emulate anyone's behavior, it would be Sam's."
