Star Wars: Galactic Racer - Exclusive Trailer Breakdown and Interview (2026)

Hold on to your helmets, Star Wars fans! A brand-new racing game is about to drop you into the heart of the galaxy, and it's looking absolutely epic. But is it just nostalgia bait, or something genuinely new? Let's dive into the details revealed at the 2025 Game Awards.

That's right, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is officially on its way, and we've got the inside scoop straight from Fuse Games and Lucasfilm Games themselves! Imagine the gritty feel of Jakku beneath your wheels, the roar of engines echoing through the Graveyard of Giants, dodging the skeletal remains of downed Star Destroyers and AT-AT walkers. This isn't just a race; it's a survival run.

This iconic location, instantly recognizable from Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a haven for scavengers like Rey, has been transformed into an adrenaline-pumping, unsanctioned racetrack. This unexpected twist is sure to stir the pot!

StarWars.com secured an exclusive interview with Fuse Games co-founder Matt Webster and Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly. Alongside the debut of the pulse-pounding first trailer (seriously, go watch it!), they offered a sneak peek at the new characters, exotic locations, and futuristic vehicles awaiting us. And this is the part most people miss: they even dropped a tantalizing hint about a certain Dug racer named Sebulba...

The Need for Speed(ers): Racing in the Star Wars DNA

Think about it: racing has always been woven into the fabric of Star Wars. George Lucas himself was a huge racing enthusiast, and that passion fueled the iconic podracing sequence in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This, of course, spawned the beloved classic game Star Wars: Episode I: Racer. Remember the thrill of mastering those tricky turns?

"When a team with such amazing racing chops like Fuse proposed a new expression of racing in a galaxy far, far away, it was a true no brainer decision,” Reilly explains. “One of the great things about Star Wars is that it can be a perfect fit for many genres and audiences. We are always looking for new and creative ways to revisit genres fans have enjoyed in the past and find unique expressions in the future.” They want to recapture that magic, while blazing new trails.

Reilly also emphasized the strong existing relationship between Lucasfilm Games and key figures at Fuse Games, pointing to their prior collaboration on Star Wars Battlefront II’s Starfighter Mode, and their leadership roles in acclaimed racing franchises like Need for Speed and Burnout. “I can't think of any other studio better suited to bring Star Wars racing back to our fans,” he stated.

So, what exactly is Star Wars: Galactic Racer?

The trailer introduces us to Shade, a mysterious new racer with a burning desire for glory and, perhaps more importantly, revenge. "Players will learn more about Shade as they progress through the game’s campaign. Your aim is to survive long enough to earn your shot at becoming an elite racing pilot,” Webster teases. "Our races are high-stakes competitions where racers do everything they can to get to the front in the solo campaign and in our awesome multiplayer gameplay.” Keep your eyes peeled in the trailer, and you might even spot a flock of steelpeckers scavenging amidst the wreckage!

The trailer showcases racers tearing across diverse landscapes like Jakku and Ando Prime on a variety of landspeeders and speederbikes. Ando Prime, in particular, provides the backdrop for a brand-new skim speeder, demonstrating its unique handling as it navigates the racing pack. “This awesome image of a skim speeder highlights those different racing lines and handling characteristics in one shot. Skim speeders are vehicles that reward flowing lines and maintaining momentum, banking through corners and knife-edging through narrow gaps. We’re really excited to bring this new creation to life and we’re looking forward to sharing more about this new vehicle and other gaming details in future updates!” Webster adds.

But here's where it gets controversial... Galactic Racer isn't just another rehash of existing racing games. It aims to stand apart by drawing inspiration from "runs-based games." Webster explains: "We’ve drawn real inspiration from runs-based games so the player will have meaningful, consequential decisions to be making on how they chose their path to become an elite racing pilot — from the vehicle they choose to start with, the upgrade choices they make to create a build that really suits their playstyle and what events they select in determining their path to become champion of the League." This means your choices matter, shaping your journey to becoming a racing legend.

He continues, “Along the way you’ll compete with rivals, journey to new planets, and master different classes of repulsor craft — or speeders — each with their own distinct capabilities.” Each vehicle type promises a unique racing experience. "Speederbikes, for example, are fast and ferocious, you’ll be braking heavily into corners, really leaning in and then massive drops of acceleration as you power your way through the exit. Also notice that in many of our events, our different speeder classes race at the same time, with exciting physical interactions as those differing racing lines come together.” The potential for chaotic, high-octane races is definitely there!

New Worlds, Familiar Faces: Sentinel One and Sebulba's Shadow

Star Wars: Galactic Racer isn't afraid to introduce new elements to the Star Wars universe. Sentinel One, revealed in the trailer, is a prime example. "It’s home to a Skakoan listening station built on a vast planetary scale with huge antennas littering the landscape,” Webster shares. “It’s also a toxic wasteland that’s been plundered for minerals with bright yellow rivers of acid that criss-cross the dark rocky terrain. These hazards inform unique racing tactics for players as the toxic fumes will interfere with your engines.” Expect challenging tracks and strategic gameplay.

And what about that Sebulba tease? The trailer hints at the return of the infamous Dug racer who famously cheated against Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace. "There’s so much love for Sebulba on the team and across the Star Wars community,” Webster says. “There are particular reasons why he finds his way into our trailer as well as a detail in this shot that may lead to even more questions…the answers to which we’ll have to leave to another time!” Could Sebulba be a mentor, a rival, or something else entirely? What do you think his role will be?

Chesko, Sebulba. We’re counting down the days until our next match when Star Wars: Galactic Racer arrives. But what are your thoughts? Are you excited about this new addition to the Star Wars gaming universe? Do you think the "runs-based" approach will work? And, most importantly, do you think Sebulba deserves a shot at redemption, or should he remain the galaxy's most notorious cheat? Let us know in the comments below!
