A recent revelation of a massive fatberg stuck in a treatment plant has led to the appearance of new 'poo balls' on Sydney beaches. The fatberg, potentially the size of four Sydney buses, is believed to be the source of these debris balls. A secret report by Sydney Water suggests that dealing with the fatberg would require shutting down the outfall for maintenance and diverting sewage, which could lead to beach closures for months. This has never been done before and is no longer considered an acceptable approach. The company is working on introducing higher levels of processing at inland plants to reduce the volume of sewage passing through the ocean outfalls. The chief executive of Sydney Water, Darren Cleary, defended the use of deepwater ocean outfalls, stating that they have been meeting environmental standards for nearly three decades. However, the issue of debris balls remains an unexpected event, and Sydney Water is taking steps to address the problem.
